Google AI and Connected Apps Could Change How We Use Search

Google AI Mode displaying Connected Apps integrations with a music player, design tool, and grocery shopping service to help users complete tasks directly from Google Search.

Connected Apps are Google’s way of letting AI Mode work with services such as Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music to help people move from searching to action. This could make Search more useful by helping users plan, create, shop, and organize with fewer steps during everyday searches and planning.

Google is rolling out the feature in AI Mode, allowing users to link supported services. Instead of finding an answer and then starting over somewhere else, people can complete more of the process through Google AI.¹

It sounds like a small upgrade, but it points to a larger shift in Search.

What Are Connected Apps in Google Search?

Connected Apps allow AI Mode to interact with services that a user chooses to link. The goal is to make everyday tasks less scattered and reduce manual app switching.

Google has already been moving toward a more action-oriented Search, and Connected Apps take that idea another step forward

For example, someone planning a barbecue could ask AI Mode to create a grocery list. With Instacart connected, those ingredients can be added to a shopping cart. The user can review the items and finish checkout through Instacart.

The same approach works for creative and entertainment tasks. Someone making a flyer can ask Canva to show useful templates. A person planning a party can ask AI Mode to create a playlist, save it to YouTube Music, and start playing it.¹

Connected Apps do not remove every extra step, but they can shorten the path from idea to action.

Google AI Is Making Search More Action-Oriented

Traditional Google searches often follow a familiar pattern. You look for ideas, compare results, open another service, and manually carry the information over.

Connected Apps could reduce some of that back-and-forth.

The real benefit is not simply that Search can reach another service. Google AI can also understand the larger task behind a request. Planning a party may involve food, invitations, music, and design. Instead of treating every part as an unrelated search, AI Mode can help connect the process.

Google is not taking full control of these tasks. People still review results, approve choices, and complete important steps such as checkout. The feature is meant to make tasks easier while leaving final decisions with the user.

Where Gemini Fits Into Google’s Plans

Connected Apps are already part of the Gemini experience. With permission, Gemini can work with services including Gmail, Google Calendar, Instacart, Spotify, YouTube Music, Dropbox, and GitHub. Availability varies by device, account, country, and Gemini version.³

Bringing similar connections into Search shows how Google is linking Gemini, AI Mode, and its broader Google AI strategy.

Gemini is designed for conversational help and more involved tasks, while Search remains where many everyday questions begin. Adding Connected Apps to AI Mode could bring some Gemini-like capabilities to people who might not open a separate AI assistant.

That is an interpretation of Google’s direction, not a confirmed plan for how the company will divide features between Gemini and Search.

Connected Apps Could Make Search More Personal

Google says Connected Apps can work with Personal Intelligence to provide more tailored responses.¹ Personal Intelligence can use information from linked Google services, including Gmail and Google Photos, to make recommendations that better reflect a person’s plans and preferences.

Google says these connections are optional. Users can choose whether to enable them and can turn them off later.²

That personalization could make Google AI more useful. A shopping recommendation might reflect an upcoming trip, while an activity suggestion could consider past plans or preferences.

It also makes account controls more important. People should understand which services are connected, what each can access, and how to remove access.

Connected Apps may offer convenience, but users will still need clear control over their information.

Search Could Become the Starting Point for More Tasks

Google says it is working with additional partners and plans to introduce more apps.¹ Instacart, Canva, and YouTube Music may be only the beginning.

Future Connected Apps could expand into travel, reservations, productivity, shopping, and other everyday services. Google has not confirmed those specific categories, so they should be viewed as possibilities rather than announced features.

Traditional search results are not disappearing overnight. Google is adding another layer that combines answers, planning, personalization, and action.

Connected Apps may not immediately change how everyone uses Search. Still, they show where Google AI is heading. The next version of Search may not simply tell people what to do. It may help them get more of it done.
